In a Jam, Dean Apologizes for Remarks on Rebel Flag

"Howard Dean apologized yesterday for his recent comments about Southerners who display the Confederate flag, saying, 'I deeply regret the pain that I may have caused.' He said he would lead the nation in a 'difficult and painful discussion' about race."

Too bad that Dean is bowing to pressure in this fashion, although with a bunch of stupid voters, what else can you do but make stupid statements.

Like a lot of northerners, Dean's critics don't quite understand that, to "us" Southerners, the Confederate flag is not a question of race but of states' rights. In this respect, it is horribly demeaning, even stupid, to identify those with the Confederate flag as racists. It's the equivalent of identifying Palestinians as "terrorists": it's just plain wrong.

Somehow I get the feeling that Dean understands all of this, but he can't go into it because he would alienate at the same time blacks, Southerners and ignorant Northerners.

Q:What to do when everyone is a Bubba and you want to be their President?
A: Be a Bubba! Worked for Clinton. Worked for Bush.
