Friedman : Iraq: Politics or Policy?
"... [E]ach time the Bush team had to choose between doing the right thing in the war on terrorism or siding with its political base and ideology, it chose its base and ideology."
Sounds to me like Tom has read Noam Chomsky's new book, Hegemony or Survival, during his sabattical. What took him so long to come to his senses?

Put politics aside and accomplish desired outcome. Novel concept, anybody read Time Magazine 9 Sept 04?

But Bubba did just the opposite: he put aside the desired outcome and chose to play politics. If Bubba had wanted to stop terrorism, he wouldn't have invaded Iraq. If Bubba had chosed to win the Iraq occupation, he wouldn't have shortchanged the troop count. Friedman, who is far from a left-winger, points this out quite cogently in his article.
